NAMIC Mutual Insurance Foundation Scholarship
The mutual property/casualty insurance industry offers a wide variety of career opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds. Property/casualty insurance is not just for students on the traditional academic path toward degrees in insurance or risk management. There are also many opportunities for students pursuing general business, finance, computer technology, predictive analytics/modeling, and much more.

Fire Science Scholarship
The NAMIC Mutual Insurance Foundation is proud to have expanded its scholarship program in 2022 for college students working toward a degree in fire science. The scholarship funds have been provided through the generosity of the Insurance Committee for Arson Control, an organization that combatted arson as a method of insurance fraud. A bachelor’s degree in the fire sciences provides students with advanced expertise in the specialized fields such as fire prevention, fire suppression, and arson and incident investigation, which directly impacts the mutual property/casualty insurance industry fight against arson throughout the United States.
Eligible applicants must be undergraduate students who plan to enroll or are already enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study related to the appropriate field of study (insurance forensics, arson investigation, or other related fields) at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational technical school.

Scholarship History
In 2012, a group within the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, known as the NAMIC Merit Society, developed a scholarship program to support students seeking an undergraduate degree in the property/casualty insurance and/or risk management field. The Merit Society dates to the 1970s when it was formed to recognize individuals within the property/casualty insurance industry who strive to complete rigorous training programs, professional development, and other opportunities for learning, service, and contributions related to their chosen profession. With its focus on supporting those who attain high levels of education, the creation of a scholarship program for undergraduate students seemed a natural outgrowth of the work of Merit Society members.
An application process was developed, criteria for eligibility was established, and a volunteer group was created to review submissions and recommend qualified students to receive scholarship funds. During its inaugural year, the scholarship program awarded two $500 scholarships. From 2013 through 2019, it awarded more than $100,000 to deserving students.
In 2019, in celebration of NAMIC’s 125th anniversary, the NAMIC Mutual Insurance Foundation expanded its fundraising efforts to raise a substantially higher amount of donations to support and attract current students who will become the future professionals of the mutual property/casualty insurance industry.
